The Nokia X1-01; My thoughts!

Posted In Africa, Events in Ghana, Ghana, Technology in Africa - By Edward Tagoe On Thursday, September 1st, 2011 With 7 Comments

It’s been more than a month since I started using the Nokia X1-01, yes I know, that makes me one of the few lucky people to feel and touch the device in Ghana. Lucky me huh? I have dropped it on the ground twice (or thrice maybe :) and still find it in the same shape as I got it on the first day, it does come with the Nokia robust and hard-to-crack feel we are all used to.

I put aside my original phone the very day I got the Nokia X1-01, I don’t really care being called an early adopter so you can say that louder! What I miss about my previous phone is the access to Internet.  I guess I can’t complain much about it since the phone was primarily made for a target audience which didn’t interact much with http and apps.

Below are my top three likes and my top two dislikes about the Nokia X1-01.

+ Its dual SIM… and it is original

The Nokia X1-01 is part of a series of three phones with dual SIM capabilities. The phones were launched in Ghana in July. Am not the type who switches between SIMs, however with this gadget in hand I had a reason try out the attractive promotions run by some of the Telcos in Ghana, without having to go through the pain of taking my original card out of my phone. It provides users with the opportunity to personalize the Dual SIM experience by giving the SIMs names, call or SMS settings, logo, ringtone or music and oh yea. I heard it is intelligent enough to remembers up to 5 separate SIMs and their various settings.

+ The music bit kept me awake

Whenever I felt lonely, I counted on my X1-01 to keep me excited and alive. Sometimes the radio did the trick , in other times the media player was just enough, playing from a 2GB Micro SD card.

+ I didn’t have to charge my battery twice a day.

Most of my colleagues charge their phones at least twice a day, and I ask myself why! I run away from this burden the day I found the X1-01. Its not as smart as a Blackberry or an i-phone, but at least it provides me with the convenience with which I can concentrate on my work. I could play music hour un-end and still have more battery power to take me through half the week, not too many dual SIM-phones can do that.

- The X1-01 is a bad reminder.

My activities at work make it necessary for me to keep reminders on almost all of my tasks and to-dos; meetings with clients, deadlines, pick-up times and of course lunch! My Nokia X1-01 would however not allow me to keep more than 10 reminders at a time. Every time I had to create an 11th reminder, I needed to delete an older (but important) one. Of course the lunch reminders were the last to be sacrificed in these case. I probably would have loved my phone more if I could keep up to 30 reminder or more at a time.

- No mobile Internet! And the World become bigger

Without Internet on my phone, I was cut off from the world. If you are the type of person who wants to have access to Internet on mobile, then the X1-01 might probably not be the right choice for you. At a price of GHC 110, you can get the Nokia C2-00 which comes with Internet.

The X1-01 comes at a price of GHS 65 and can be found in almost every phone shop. Hit the Nokia website if you want to know more about this phone.

Great review, Edward! I’d just like to know…was your switch to the X1-01 sponsored by Nokia? I know they approached BlogGh some time ago. Best!

  3. Edward Tagoe says:

Nope, the review was not sponsored by Nokia. Just my thoughts after using the first set of Nokia Dual-SIM phones. I must admit though, that I had the chance to be one of the first people in Ghana to lay hands on the X1-01 because of some affiliation I had with them.

  4. Gameli says:

Great review, makes me wanna have a feel of the phone. But the mobile Internet bit is a downside.

Gameli, True! For people like you the other dual SIM range ie C2-00 should do the trick. It comes with Internet etc.
